Brett James is the General Manager of Southport Yacht Club (SYC), a not-for-profit association with over 150 employees. Comprising four venues, SYC is currently Queensland’s largest yacht club.
Beginning his career in the golf industry working at Sanctuary Cove and Emerald Lakes, Brett has over 20 years’ experience in hospitality and sport management. Along with these credentials, Brett’s vast understanding in leisure management and membership organisations bring a wealth of knowledge to assist in future contributions of the Gold Coast tourism operations.
Moving to the Gold Coast at the age of four, Brett attended Aquinas Catholic College, continuing to further his educational studies at Griffith University in Business Management.
With his love for golf, Brett became a Golf Professional in 2000, playing at major tournaments across the globe whilst living in the United Kingdom, Japan, America and New Zealand.
Leaving Australia in 2009, Brett ventured to Christchurch, New Zealand to develop Pegasus Town, a vibrant and thriving community with a championship golf and sports club, dining facilities and a strong directory list of businesses, leading to management roles of international and national sporting events in both New Zealand and Australia.
After returning back to Australia in 2012 Brett excepted the role of General Manger at Southport Yacht Club. During his time the Club has expanded to four venues around the Gold Coast, increase turnover to over 12 million and assisted in building the Mega Yacht Berth.
Brett has also held positions on the Boards of the Southport Chamber of Commerce, Clubs Queensland and Regional Development Australia, with a great vision in sustainable and consistent growth for the Gold Coast.
Having lived on the Gold Coast for 40+ years, Brett has a great passion for his wonderful city and sees great potential in future progression, truly believing the Gold Coast is the best place on earth.
