Wel has just celebrated 52 years at sea having started as a cadet deck officer with the Australian National Line and worked his way to ships master. His intimate knowledge of the Great Barrier Reef led to his appointment as a Reef Pilot 32 years ago.

Having piloted many cruise ships and super yachts in his career, he took a closer interest in both those aspects of the marine industry and is now the Cruise Ship & Super Yacht Co-ordinator for Australian Reef Pilots which covers the shoreside management of the pilotage and passage of both those types of vessels through the Great Barrier Reef.
